Johann Thorsson, international writer in residence at Exeter Custom House.
Johann Thorsson is an author from Reykjavik, Iceland who is visiting Exeter for a short residency, funded by the British Council. His residency helps us revive in a writerly fashion those international links which the Custom House once presided over at the peak of Exeter’s illustrious trading past.
He will talk about the rise in popularity of Scandinavian Noir fiction and why the Scandinavian countries, held up as models of peace, prosperity and equality, are producing literature of such dark grittiness. His focus will be on the realities of living in the isolated small towns of Iceland. He will also share with us some of his own writing in the genre which he is working on whilst resident in Exeter.
